In Ohio, Halloween is not just an event; it’s an experience. I went in assuming haunted houses would be brief, somewhat campy tours with some jump scares. But Ohio surprised me for the better. These are immersive, theatrical and complex. Some are like being in a horror film, others are like entering the mindscape of another. And the best part? And they’re all different.
I’ve explored a couple of the most popular haunted houses in the state and can tell you, these five are great – because they are not only terrifying, but also unique, creative and actually entertaining.

Best Haunted Houses to Visit in Ohio
1. The Dent Schoolhouse (Cincinnati)
Address: 5963 Harrison Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45248, United States
When a haunted house is held in a school, it’s automatically a little creepier. It’s a theme the Dent Schoolhouse capitalises on. The premise (a janitor and missing kids) gives it a psychological twist from the start.
As I toured, I saw how meticulously the school is crafted. The classrooms feel like haunted but not contrived, the corridors are claustrophobic and dark, and the pacing is tense. I literally stopped because it was too still, something was going to happen. And of course, it did.
Budget:
General Admission: around $29.99
Fast Pass: up to $59.99
Facilities & Perks:
Snacks and food outside
Restrooms and waiting areas
Merchandise and souvenir shop
There is no free food or drink, but the outside space is like a Halloween carnival. This is one of my favourite haunted houses in Ohio.
2. Spooky Ranch (Columbia Station)
Address: 19066 E River Rd, Columbia Station, OH 44028, United States
Where Spooky Ranch really delivers is if you’re looking for more than just one spooky experience. It’s definitely more of a haunted theme park rather than a haunted house.
My favourite was the haunted hayride. The fact that it’s outside in the middle of the night with fog makes it less contained. There’s no telling where the scare comes from, and somehow that makes it different.
They also have indoor attractions such as haunted barns and 3D, so it’s not always outside, and this keeps things interesting.
Budget:
Multiple attractions (Full Experience): approximately $30
Smaller packages: around $25
Facilities & Perks:
Several rides at one park
Bonfire and sitting areas
Food vendors and rest zones
No free lunch, but lots of food. It’s an early morning and long day kind of place.
3. Factory of Terror (Canton)
Address: 4125 Mahoning Rd NE, Canton, OH 44705, United States
Factory of Terror does something entirely different by taking an industrial theme, and it’s great.
As soon as you walk in, it’s like you’re stepping into a creepy abandoned factory where something has gone terribly wrong. There are different levels and tight corridors, which add to the sense of claustrophobia.
But more than anything, the mood was what really stuck. It doesn’t just jump scare you; it’s tense. The music, lighting and set design gradually create the anxiety until you’re on the edge of your seat.
Budget:
General Admission: around $28–$35
Facilities & Perks:
Indoor, multi-level attraction
Group packages available
Local restaurants and hotels
No free food, but it’s worth the price for the quality.
4. Haunted Schoolhouse & Laboratory (Akron)
Address: 1300 Triplett Blvd, Akron, OH 44306, United States
Haunted Schoolhouse & Laboratory is two haunted houses in one.
You begin in a school which is already spooky, and then move into a lab with bizarre experiments and scenes of mayhem. It’s so seamless you don’t even realise when you leave one scene and move to another.
Budget:
General Admission: about $29.95
Fast Pass: around $44.90
Facilities & Perks:
Multi-floor experience
Bar area between attractions
Photo op spots and waiting rooms
That bar is an excellent addition. It allows you to catch your breath, laugh about the experience and get ready for the next event.
5. Fortress of Fear ScreamPark (Alliance)
Address: 12175 State St NE, Alliance, OH 44601, United States
If you’re the kind of person who likes choices, then Fortress of Fear ScreamPark is for you. It’s another multi-ride location, but it’s a bit more laid back and more of a festival atmosphere than some of the others.
You can visit a range of themed attractions, and each has a different scare factor. Some are more over-the-top, some are more extreme, so you can pick and choose your own level of scaring.
Budget:
General Admission: around $25–$35
Facilities & Perks:
Multiple haunted attractions
Outdoor entertainment areas
Food vendors and seating
No free food, but a lot of the food and the activities contribute to an overall Halloween feel.
Conclusion
From my experience, there is one thing that is apparent – Ohio takes haunted houses seriously. These attractions are not just Halloween gimmicks; they are crafted experiences that blend narrative, performance and design.
I especially love their diversity. The Dent Schoolhouse is immersive and cinematic. Spooky Ranch is like an all-night affair. Factory of Terror is intense. Haunted Schoolhouse & Laboratory is about the detail and transitions, and Fortress of Fear ScreamPark is about variety and flexibility.
If you do decide to visit, make sure to bring along some friends. Be prepared with comfortable footwear, early arrival, and don’t be fooled by any of these. You never know what to expect from haunted houses in Ohio.
And if you want to make it a special trip, make it a road trip. Just be prepared for more screams coming out than you thought possible.
