The community is mourning the loss of 87-year-old Ernest Edward Carpenter, affectionately known to many as “Ernie.” He passed away on April 10, 2026, in the same city where he was born and lived most of his life.
From a young age, Ernie developed a strong work ethic while working alongside his father at a local garage. This early experience paved the way for his lifelong passion for mechanics.
Although he eventually built a long and dedicated career at Trane, he never lost his love for fixing things and could often be found quietly tinkering even in his later years.
Ernie’s mechanical skills also made him a respected figure at the local dirt tracks. In 1957, he proudly earned the title of racing champion. However, loved ones note that he found his greatest joy behind the scenes, expertly building race car engines for others. Many drivers deeply trusted his craftsmanship, knowing he treated every engine as if it were his own.
Above all, his family remained his greatest legacy. Ernie shared an incredible 70 years of marriage with his wife, Maybelle.
His family and friends will deeply miss his steady presence, his simple way of life, and his unwavering devotion to those he loved.
