The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has said it has nothing to do with a meeting held in Abuja that was called a “National Executive Committee (NEC)” meeting. The party leaders said it was fake and illegal.
Femi Olaniyi Ferrari, who leads the SDP State Chairmen Forum, said many of the people who attended the meeting were misled. He accused former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, of being behind the meeting and trying to cause confusion in the party. Ferrari said El-Rufai is no longer a member of SDP and has no right to speak for the party.
He said: “El-Rufai has been suspended by the party in Kaduna. He’s pretending to be a member, but he is not. That meeting was not approved by the party’s main leadership.”
Ferrari added that the real leaders of the party are Shehu Musa Gabam (Chairman) and Dr Olu Agunloye (Secretary). He urged the public to ignore anyone else claiming to speak for the SDP.
Also, the party’s North West Zonal Secretary, Idris Inuwa, told journalists in Kaduna that El-Rufai has never been a registered member of the SDP. He accused him of impersonation and warned the public not to take him seriously.
The party also criticised another politician, Umar Ardo, for allegedly using the SDP name to promote another party.
The SDP said it may soon set up a committee to investigate and expose those using its name illegally.
