Music executive Ubi Franklin has addressed viral rumors claiming that he “stole” a luxury wristwatch while attending Davido’s star-studded wedding in Miami, USA.
The allegations surfaced on social media earlier this week, after being reported by a popular blog, and quickly gained traction, sparking heated debates online.
In a bid to clear his name, Ubi took to his X account to issue a detailed statement, strongly denying the accusations. “I am currently aware of the recent circulation on social media linking my name to an alleged theft.
I wish to make it clear that these allegations are completely false and misleading,” he stated.
The timing of the rumors, Ubi explained, was especially difficult as he had just returned from the wedding and was preparing for his sister’s funeral.
He recalled an incident during the Miami trip where an individual named Benny offered to sell him a wristwatch. After examining the watch and confirming its previous ownership, Ubi decided not to purchase it, citing potential complications.
However, during the wedding church service, Benny sent another wristwatch through his brother, which Ubi agreed to buy, paying for it in full.
“Given the busy circumstances surrounding the wedding, I was in possession of both wristwatches and wore the one he sent to me through his brother,” Ubi explained.
After the wedding, Ubi had to leave Miami urgently to finalize funeral arrangements for his sister. While on his flight, he received a call from Benny regarding the first wristwatch.
“I want to state clearly: I am not a thief. I have never stolen from anyone in my life. I purchased a wristwatch and paid in full from Benny,” he clarified.
Benny also publicly debunked the theft rumor earlier in the day. Despite this, the false narrative continued to spread.
Ubi’s statement comes as he deals with both a personal loss and online scrutiny.
