The U.S. State Department has launched an investigation into Harvard University’s eligibility to continue sponsoring participants in the Exchange Visitor Program.
The investigation follows a series of disputes between the Trump administration and the Ivy League university.
The inquiry, announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, focuses on ensuring that State Department programs align with U.S. interests. It follows previous tensions, including the revocation of Harvard’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program status in May, which was temporarily blocked by a federal judge.
The investigation specifically targets individuals at Harvard on J-1 visas, including foreign professors and students. The administration has previously accused Harvard of failing to provide necessary information about its international students and raised concerns about antisemitism on campus. Harvard has vowed to comply with regulations, calling the investigation retaliatory and a violation of its First Amendment rights.
This move is part of a broader effort by the U.S. government to increase oversight of foreign nationals and scrutinize visa applicants more thoroughly.
