President Bola Tinubu has taken major steps to support Nigeria’s retirees. On Wednesday, he ordered free healthcare for low-income pensioners under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), a move many say is long overdue.
The president gave the directive after meeting with the head of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Ms Omolola Oloworaran. She explained the struggles retirees face due to inflation and rising costs.
Tinubu also instructed that long-awaited pension increases be paid without delay. He said retirees deserve dignity and comfort after years of service.
A key part of his order is the removal of the Nigeria Police Force from the CPS. This follows public protests by retired police officers who complained about poor pensions and harsh living conditions.
“These officers served this country. They must not suffer in retirement,” Tinubu said in a statement released by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga.
Ms Oloworaran also revealed plans to allow Nigerians abroad to contribute in foreign currencies and promised more reforms to improve pensioners’ lives.
President Tinubu praised the reforms and promised that his administration would not forget ordinary Nigerians, especially those who have worked hard for the country.
