The community is going through a period of grief following the death of Darick Navarro, a 47-year-old UPS delivery driver who became a familiar figure as a result of his daily routes.
Darick Navarro, a 47-year-old resident of Hutchinson, Kansas, died Tuesday when his delivery van was hit by a train at a rural railroad intersection west of town.
The accident occurred roughly at 3 p.m. as Navarro was operating his UPS truck along U.S. 50 and South Woodberry Road. Witnesses claim the place can be so quiet yet so deadly.
However, emergency services rushed to the location as authorities attempted to rescue Navarro from his truck. Sadly, Navarro was confirmed dead at the scene.
Fortunately, none of the train crew members were hurt, and there were no apparent injuries or mechanical problems with the train.
The investigation is ongoing.
To many in Hutchinson, Darick Navarro was something much more significant than a food deliveryman.
His friends and coworkers have described him as a nice person, a person to count on, and a person who was very proud of his work.
One of the ways they remember Navarro was by his smile.
As condolences have flooded social media sites, the loss of Darick Navarro has become a sobering reminder that the dangers exist each day for the people who keep the wheels turning.
