Durham, Maine, mourns the unexpected demise of 85-year-old resident, Peter Lowe, whose legacy of compassion and kind soul reached generations alike.
Peter died shortly after a car accident that occurred while he was going to retrieve his mail, walking along Royalsborough Road.
According to the ongoing investigation by the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office, the dark clothing he had on, as well as the poor lighting on the road, could have contributed to the accident.
To the town of Dunham, Peter was a lot more than the unfortunate circumstances of his death. He was described as a loving, mellow man who loved his gardening as much as his peaceful evening walks, where he would greet anyone he came across.
He was beloved as a doting father, grandfather, and great-grandfather with a home of laughter, love, and good food. He was also willing to help with anything without prompting.
He would shovel snow for neighbours, lend a listening ear, and give words of wisdom. All of these with an easy, reassuring smile that lingered way longer than the conversation lasted.
Thoughts, memories, and prayers, hashtags like #RememberingPeterLowe and #DurhamStrong are all over social media as the community prepares vigils and tributes to celebrate a life characterized by compassion.
