Google has announced that Nigerian university students, along with students from seven other African countries, will receive free one-year subscriptions to its AI Pro plan.
The initiative is part of the company’s push to prepare Africa’s youth for an AI-driven economy.
The program targets students aged 18 and above in higher education institutions across Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Egypt, Morocco, South Africa, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe.
Beneficiaries will gain access to advanced tools like Deep Research, which compiles reports from hundreds of sources, and Gemini 2.5 Pro, designed to assist with academic writing and assignments.
According to Alex Okosi, Google’s Managing Director for Africa, the program is part of a broader investment in Africa’s digital future.
Over the past four years, Google has invested $17 million in training, curriculum support, and AI access for universities, with another $9 million planned for the coming year.
Alongside the AI program, Google is building four new subsea cable hubs to improve connectivity across Africa, expanding the reach of its Africa Connect initiative.
This effort will strengthen digital access, allowing students and institutions to fully leverage AI tools for learning and research.
With this initiative, Google aims to empower millions of African students, helping them develop the digital skills needed to thrive in tomorrow’s economy.
