Amnesty International has urged the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to release activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore without delay.
Sowore was detained on Wednesday after honouring a police invitation at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. He was accused of forgery and inciting public disturbance.
The rights group condemned the arrest, calling it “unlawful and politically motivated.” In their statement, Amnesty said Sowore’s detention was just another example of how Nigerian authorities try to silence critics.
They demanded that all charges against him be dropped and insisted that Sowore must be allowed to speak freely.
