Residents of Oworonshoki, a community in Lagos, caused a major traffic jam on the 3rd Mainland Bridge today after protesting the demolition of their homes.
The demolitions happened overnight without prior notice, leaving many, including the elderly and children, homeless.
Protesters said they were told in April to “beautify” their homes, not to leave them. One resident, Yemi, explained that similar demolitions occurred last year, resulting in deaths from shock.
The protesters accused the government of creating a “mega city without the poor” and vowed to continue their protest until their demands are heard.
The community, now forced to sleep on the streets, has expressed its frustration, saying it would rather protest on the highway than remain silent.
