Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has officially declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, as a public holiday for all civil servants in celebration of this year’s Isese Day.
The announcement was made through a circular issued by the Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, on Monday, August 18.
The circular was sent to government ministries, agencies, local councils, and parastatals, directing accounting officers to ensure all workers are informed.
According to the statement, the declaration is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to preserve Yoruba culture, spirituality, and traditions.
The Governor noted that Isese Day is not just a holiday but a moment of reflection on the richness of Yoruba heritage and a way to show support for traditional institutions across Lagos State.
“In reaffirming the commitment of the State Government towards promoting our indigenous culture, tradition, and preserving our heritage, while providing necessary support for traditional institutions in the State, Mr. Governor has declared Wednesday, 20th August, 2025 as a Work-Free Day,” the circular read.
Isese Day, which literally means “day of tradition,” has become an annual event recognized in Lagos to honor the Yoruba belief system and celebrate cultural pride.
It is marked with traditional prayers, festivals, and community gatherings that highlight the importance of unity and identity.
Workers are expected to resume normal duties on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 8:00 a.m. sharp.
By recognizing Isese Day, Lagos joins other states and countries that are taking active steps to celebrate indigenous values.
The holiday is also a reminder of the need for balance between modern development and respect for tradition, ensuring that future generations inherit a Lagos that is not only modern but also deeply rooted in its cultural identity.
