The community of East St. Louis is very sad after the death of 34-year-old Estelle Stamps. She was remembered for her gentle voice and how she always paused to listen when others spoke.
Estelle was killed late Wednesday night in a violent two-car crash on Illinois Route 159, north of Douglas Road. State Police say the crash happened around 10:22 p.m. Estelle was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators confirmed she lived on South 42nd Street. One person from the other vehicle survived and was taken to a hospital, but no updates have been shared.
First responders said one vehicle may have caught fire, and someone might have been thrown out during the crash. The road was closed for hours while teams looked at debris, tire marks, and vehicle positions to figure out what went wrong.
Friends say Estelle had a warm laugh that made people feel welcome. Neighbors remember her chatting on porches, checking on elderly residents, and offering small acts of kindness that meant a lot.
As news spread overnight, people gathered outside homes, sharing memories and prayers. Many say they hold onto the light Estelle brought—a light they believe will stay with them after this tragedy
