Two Nigerian swimmers, Clinton Opute and Colins Ebingha, have been awarded prestigious training scholarships by World Aquatics.
This scholarship comes at a time when swimming is gaining popularity across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Clinton Opute, a talented swimmer from Delta State, recently competed at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships.
He holds multiple Nigerian national records, including in the 200 butterfly and 200 individual medley.
His scholarship will cover his training at the CN d’Antibes Training Centre in France from September 1, 2025, until June 30, 2028, along with accommodation, meals, insurance, and a monthly allowance.
Colins Ebingha, from Bayelsa State, will train in Hungary until August 2026.
Though he has no individual records, Ebingha is part of the Nigerian relay teams that hold national records. He also swam at the World Championships in Singapore, securing strong finishes.
Both swimmers represent Nigeria’s growing swimming scene, with Opute and Ebingha joining fellow African athletes, such as Namibia’s Ronan Wantenaar, benefiting from similar scholarships.
Nigeria’s recent achievements, like Abdul Jabar Adama’s silver medal at the World Aquatics Championships, indicate that the country is developing a strong pool of swimmers, possibly for the 2028 Olympics.
These scholarships mark a major milestone for Nigerian swimming and provide hope for future success in international competitions.
