President Bola Tinubu says he had a “good sleep and nice breakfast” after cancelling the military parade for Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebrations.
Speaking at the unveiling of the newly renovated Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, President Tinubu shared his thoughts on the cancelled parade.
“I’m glad to wish Nigerians a happy 65th Independence Anniversary,” he said. “This day breaks the usual routine of military march-pasts and parades.” He added that cancelling the event allowed him to have a restful sleep and enjoy his breakfast before attending the evening event.
Earlier, the government had announced the cancellation of the traditional military parade. This decision was made to focus on other forms of celebrating the nation’s independence.
During the event, the President also expressed his pleasure in renaming the National Arts Theatre in Lagos after Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka. Tinubu described Soyinka as “one of the greatest assets” to Nigeria and the world, praising the literary giant for his contributions to culture and creativity.
