The people of Martinez are very sad after the death of Shaniyah Moane Kazee. She was 19 years old. Shaniyah was known for her bright smile and for making everyone feel included. She was badly hurt on Tuesday afternoon on Fig Tree Lane, and the city is in shock.
Neighbors say Shaniyah was talking outside just before she fell in the parking lot. Her boyfriend knelt beside her and begged her to stay awake. A neighbor, A’Livia Meredith, ran over to help and said Shaniyah went in and out—whispering one moment and quiet the next.
Shaniyah was taken to John Muir Walnut Creek Hospital, but she did not survive.
Later, police said that Shaniyah’s mother, 36-year-old Brittney Evanna Kazee, was arrested and charged with killing her. People in the community say they cannot understand how something so terrible could happen.
Friends say Shaniyah was loving, bold, and full of life. She hugged people tightly, laughed loudly, and checked on her friends even when she was busy.
Vigils are being planned as Martinez grieves. Shaniyah Moane Kazee will be remembered for the joy she brought and the love she shared with others.
