There was heavy traffic around Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) in Lagos on Monday as visually impaired persons staged a protest, forcing many passengers to abandon their cars and walk long distances to catch their flights.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) issued a travel advisory, warning travellers about the gridlock and advising them to check traffic updates, confirm flight schedules with their airlines, and use alternative routes where possible.
The protest was organised by members of the Farmcraft Centre for the Blind, who said their school had been closed for over two years despite repeated appeals to the government.
According to the group’s spokesperson, the closure has denied them access to education, leaving many visually impaired persons with no choice but to beg on the streets.
By 11 am, major access roads to the domestic wing of the airport were blocked, causing significant delays for passengers and airport workers.
FAAN apologised for the inconvenience and thanked passengers for their patience, urging them to remain safe and stay informed.
The protesters said they would not back down until the government addressed their grievances and reopened their school.
