The community of Taunton, Massachusetts, is coming together after a devastating house explosion on Plain Street. On the morning of February 25, a sudden blast, caused by a natural gas leak, completely destroyed a three-family home and heavily damaged nearby houses.
A 25-year-old mother, Lucitha Blanc, and her 2-year-old daughter, Janelle, were inside when the home exploded and quickly caught fire. In an incredibly brave act, Lucitha managed to escape but ran straight back into the burning building to rescue her little girl. Both suffered severe burns and were rushed to area hospitals, where they are now recovering.
The terrifying blast shook the neighborhood. Neighbors rushed to help, even digging fire hydrants out of the heavy snow left by a recent blizzard so firefighters could battle the massive flames.
While eight residents lost everything they owned, the close-knit community and local businesses are now stepping up to raise money and support the displaced families as they begin to rebuild their lives.
