A tragic accident occurred on Monday morning at Volkswagen, inward Mile 2, Lagos, claiming the life of a driver whose vehicle collided with a stationary bus.
According to officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the incident happened when a Toyota Highlander Jeep (APP 150 EY), moving at high speed, rammed into a T4 commercial bus (KJA 328 XH) that had stopped illegally by the roadside to pick up passengers.
The force of the crash killed the jeep’s driver instantly, leaving the scene in shock and disrupting traffic in the busy corridor.
LASTMA operatives responded swiftly, securing the area to prevent secondary accidents.
They removed the victim’s body from the wreckage and handed it over to officers from the Ojo Police Division, who later transported it to the C-Niger Mortuary in Abule Ado.
Both damaged vehicles were towed to the police station for further investigation, while traffic flow was restored after initial gridlock.
Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, expressed his condolences to the deceased’s family.
He described the incident as avoidable, blaming it on excessive speed and the dangerous practice of illegal roadside passenger pickups.
He urged commercial drivers to always use designated bus stops and warned motorists against reckless driving.
Bakare-Oki also reminded vehicle owners to carry out regular maintenance, especially on brakes and other safety systems, before embarking on any journey.
He stressed that the Lagos State Government remains committed to strict road safety enforcement and continuous public education.
“This tragedy is a painful reminder that human lives must never be wasted due to carelessness on our roads,” he said.
“Every driver has a duty to protect both their passengers and other road users.”
