The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has officially launched its “Operation Go Cashless” initiative at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja.
The new system aims to end cash-handling delays and make payments at Nigerian airports faster, safer, and more transparent.
FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, said the new system marks a big step forward in improving passenger experience.
Represented by Ms. Adebola Agunbiade, Director of Commercial and Business Development, Kuku said that starting from September 29, 2025, FAAN will begin phasing out physical cash at all its revenue points, including car parks, access gates, and VIP lounges.
She explained that passengers can now make instant payments using the FAAN Contactless Card, which works with a simple tap.
The card is designed to be fast, convenient, and hygienic, while also providing real-time SMS alerts for every transaction. Users can monitor their balance through a secure online dashboard and even block the card instantly if it’s lost or stolen.
According to Kuku, the system will make airport operations more transparent and accountable, while aligning Nigeria with global aviation standards.
She also announced that trained ambassadors have been deployed to assist travelers and ensure a smooth transition.
FAAN commended President Bola Tinubu and Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo for supporting the modernization of Nigerian airports.
Airport Manager, Mr. Rindap Domtur, praised the new cashless model, expressing confidence that it will end the long queues and confusion often caused by cash transactions at airport gates.
With this move, Nigeria’s airports are one step closer to achieving a truly world-class travel experience.
