David Gergen has died at the age of 83. He was a respected political adviser and teacher. His family said he passed away on July 10, 2025. He had suffered from a disease called Lewy body dementia.
Gergen was born in North Carolina. He spent his life working for the public. He advised four U.S. presidents from both political parties. He worked with Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton. This was rare and earned him deep respect. He helped write speeches and guide the presidents.
Gergen believed that people should work together. Friends said he was kind and thoughtful. He helped create a famous line for President Reagan: “Are you better off than you were four years ago?”
Later, Gergen appeared on television to discuss politics. He also taught at Harvard University. He started a center there to help teach young leaders.
He leaves behind his wife, Anne, and their children and grandchildren. Many Americans remember David Gergen as a leader who believed in kindness and honest communication.
