In a strong message delivered at the funeral service of the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the Diocesan Bishop of St. Peter’s Cathedral, Williams Aladekugbe, has expressed concern over the focus of Nigerian politicians on the 2027 general elections rather than addressing the current challenges facing the country.
Bishop Aladekugbe criticized the premature discussion about the 2027 elections, stating that it was a disgrace to governance. He emphasized that instead of focusing on politics, politicians should prioritize solving pressing issues like poverty, unemployment, and insecurity that affect millions of Nigerians. He called it a “reckless disregard” for the people’s mandate when politicians focus on their personal agendas rather than the nation’s well-being.
Referring to politicians promising to serve only a single term, the bishop said, “Any politician bargaining for only one term is a sign of desperation. It will not work.” He expressed disappointment in leaders who prioritize personal image over governance.
The bishop also urged the government to take immediate steps to tackle youth unemployment and insecurity, calling it “deeply regrettable” that the country has become synonymous with violence and insecurity. He stressed that the primary responsibility of the government is to protect its citizens.
He ended with a call for Nigerians to live godly lives, reminding them of the inevitability of death and the need to lead lives that impact others positively.
The event was attended by prominent figures, including Governor Seyi Makinde and members of the Olubadan Advisory Council.
