A very shocking event occurred late Tuesday night in New York City when a 28 year old Aaron Walker supposedly pushed an off-duty NYPD officer onto the train tracks at the 3rd Avenue L Station in Manhattan’s East Village.
According to the details provided by the police, the officer had already just finished a security detail, managed to narrowly escape with his life without getting hit by the incoming train.
Witnesses still recall the screeching of the brakes as everyone was shook. Both men hurried off the platform before Aaron fled through the tunnels. Officers track Aaron to the Union Square, where he was caught and arrested under the charges which included attempted murder, assault and trespassing.
Walker has a rather daunting record with 18 prior arrests – ranging from theft to unprovoked subway attacks – and had only been freed a couple of days prior.
Judge Jeffrey Gershuny ordered Walker be held without bail and called the attack “completely unprovoked,” noting the officer could see the train’s light as he fell.
Thankfully the injured officer remains in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital. The case has put more pressure over repeat offenders and subway safety, with commuters demanding better protection. Officials promised a proper mental health evaluation as Walker awaits his next court date on October 15.
