The Future of Art and Fashion
One of the many pre-university and higher education courses run by Bradford College School of Art is the University of Arts London Level 3 Fashion Design qualification program. The program’s two-year course is equivalent to three A-levels, and is widely recognised by universities and employers as a strong foundation for progressing into the fashion industry or higher education.
The UAL program actually helps students develop the creative, technical, and professional skills needed for fashion design. Through hands-on projects and industry-inspired briefs, students can steadily build their portfolios for future opportunities. Students will steadily proceed from general creative studies into more specialised fashion practice, building confidence and expertise along the way.
What Students Learn in the University of Arts London Fashion Design Program
Through the course, students usually gain a wide range of core skills that are essential for success in the fashion industry. They learn everything from Fashion Design & Illustration (creating designs, and presenting them through sketchbooks, lookbooks, and digital illustration) to basic seamstress tasks like Pattern Cutting & Garment Construction. Students are taught how to experiment with different textiles or manipulate and embellish fabric using both traditional and digital methods.
The course does not stop there, though. Students taking the program also get to explore the history of fashion, sustainability, and cultural influences, and how to use them to inform creative decisions through the Research and Contextual Studies. They can also learn to build strong presentation and portfolio skills to showcase their work with digital design software like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and CAD tools used by industry professionals. Specialisation and exploration a big areas in the program as well. As it helps students try out areas like womenswear, menswear, sportswear, accessories, costume design, or fashion promotion to find their specific niche.
The course is largely taught through workshops, individual tutorials, and project-based learning. This often includes live briefs and industry visits to give students a taste of real-world fashion.
What’s Next After Qualification
Becoming UAL Fashion Design Certified opens up quite a range of options for students who want to continue to specialise in fashion. They can proceed to university to get their BA (Hons) fashion degrees at top universities like Central Saint Martins, London College of Fashion, Westminster, Kingston, and others.
They can also move directly to full-time employment or apprenticeships. Graduates of the University of Arts London Fashion and Design program can specialise as Junior Fashion Designers, Pattern Cutters, Garment Technicians, Textile Designers, Fashion Illustrator or Stylist, Wardrobe Assistant, and even a Fashion Journalist. If you are feeling very ambitious, you can even launch your own brand or fashion house.
Alongside these creative and practical skills, Students also develop transferable abilities during their two-year education. Soft skills like teamwork, communication, and project management are built while working on projects, coursework, a portfolio, and a final project. Qualities that are highly valued by employers in the job market.
Requirements to Enroll
The minimum requirement to gain a place in the UAL program is usually 4-5 GCSEs at grade 4/C or higher (including English and preferably a creative subject) or a Merit at Level 2. You will also need a portfolio of your former or current work and an interview.
While everyone of all ages can apply to the program, the program is fully funded for most 16- to 18-year-olds. Except for the additional costs for materials, equipment, and trips required during the program
